Department of Biological Science and Engineering was established in 2002 and belongs to School of Chemical and Biological Engineering, University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB). The department offers Bachelor Degree in Biotechnology to 60 undergraduates every year and Master Degrees in Biology and Bioengineering to about 50 graduate students every year. The department also enrolls PhD candidates by participating in “Chemistry” doctoral program.
Currently, the department has 5 full professors and 10 associate professors. Furthermore, all faculty members are PhDs. The research areas include Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular biology, Metabolic engineering, Biochemical engineering, and Pesticide testing and toxicology. The department has been supported financially by National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Key R&D Program of China, and programs of corporation research for firms. In recent 5 years, the department has received more than 20 million RMB in research funding, more than 300 research papers have been published and more than 30 national invention patents have been declared or obtained, which indicate that the department has a very good development prospect in scientific research.
The department has totally 5 specialized laboratories for microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology and genetics, respectively. Meanwhile, it has established several technical platforms, including those for biochemistry and molecular biology, biochemical engineering, fermentation engineering and pesticide residue determination. The instruments in the department are including LC-MS-MS, GC-MS, scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), flow cytometer (FCM), biochip, real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) amplifier, automatic microbial fermentation tank, total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer. The value of the instruments amounts to more than 20 million RMB.
In recent years, relying on the engineering advantages of USTB, the department is looking for talents from home and abroad, seizing opportunities and fighting harder. As one of the fastest growing departments in USTB, the Department of Biological Science and Engineering has become an important teaching and research base with distinctive features.
